OPEN.RADIO - REDEFINING RADIO

RADIO CHALLENGES

Radio is a key part of daily life in Europe, as a key source of information, entertainment and education, with 82% of citizens listening daily.

However, this has been declining year on year, along with the length of time they listen, due to several factors:

The traditional prominence of radio is increasingly being challenged, as one possible source of entertainment among others.

The competition model for radio has shifted from broadcaster vs. broadcaster, to broadcaster vs. streaming platform. Audiences increasingly favour platforms that give them what they want, when they want it, how they want it.

Radio is becoming multiplatform (spanning both broadcast and internet), requiring additional metadata. The use of open standards, agreed by the industry would significantly decrease the cost to reach all platforms, and provide a foundation on which to create a better user experience.

Caused by this lack of a clear consensus, commercial gatekeepers thrive. They promise prominence and reach on new platforms, in exchange for the opportunity to control and monetize the relationship between a broadcaster and their audience.

If broadcasters do not meet these challenges head-on, they will lose their direct connection to their audiences, and radio will forever lose its societal importance.

OPEN.RADIO SOLUTION

Open.radio solution is to create a modular ecosystem, built upon a core player with an additional innovation and integration hub.

CORE PLAYER

The core will provide a modern analog of the traditional radio tuner in the internet age: easy, direct access to radio content across multiple devices, controlled directly by broadcasters, without the need for an intermediary.

This will be implemented by an open platform for decentralized radio service discovery, along with the provision of rich, additional metadata for an enhanced user experience.

White-label applications

to support reaching new platforms

Broadcasters will remain prominent on new platforms, offering a consistent user experience and brand preservation based on openly standardized metadata.

isteners will have new ways to interact with radio, including the ability to ask for specific content (name, genre, mood) and providing a return path to the broadcaster.

By providing the framework for decentralized service discovery, this keeps radio democratic, removing the need for a gatekeeper.

INNOVATION AND INTEGRATION HUB

The Innovation and Integration hub (I2Hub) is a companion product to the core. It provides a platform and services to support their adoption of additional services for an enhanced radio user experience. It also enables easy integration of the core within their existing workflows.

The hub will kickstart a community of service providers, device manufacturers and radio innovators through a code exchange platform – acting as an equivalent to an ‘app store’ and enabling them to extend the existing functionality.

ROADMAP

The implementation of open.radio will happen in two phases.

Phase 1 (2018-2020) focuses on the implementation of the core player.
